The Prisoner on the Lighthouse (English version below.)
1983 gav Högsta domstolen Ahlmark rätt i sak.

The Prisoner on the Lighthouse
On October 26, 1977, the Soviet oil tanker Tsesis ran aground 100 meters west of the Kärringklubben reef near Fifång in the Södertälje Channel off Trosa. The ship sprang a leak, and approximately 1,000 cubic meters of oil spilled into the sea. The Swedish Maritime Administration blamed the accident on the pilot and the ship’s captain. Cartographer Anders Ahlmark of the Swedish Maritime Administration claimed that the agency was responsible for the accident because it had failed to include the shoal—which had been mapped as early as 1969—on current nautical charts. The Swedish Maritime Administration maintained that the nautical chart was not incorrect.
Ahlmark was barred from working as a cartographer at the Swedish Maritime Administration and was forcibly transferred to the agency’s lighthouse workshop for retraining as an electrical engineer.
The media took up the case for further scrutiny when, in September 1979, Ahlmark was stationed at the Öland South Shoal lighthouse, and he was dubbed “The Prisoner of the Lighthouse” in the press. In 1983, the Supreme Court ruled in Ahlmark’s favor on the merits of the case. The nautical chart was a navigational aid, and the error in the chart caused the accident.
Anders Ahlmark has become a symbol of moral courage and the price it can exact.
Just as in the story of “The Prisoner of the Lighthouse,” there are many shoals in our society where one can run aground on life’s journey. The spiritual aspect of life is often ignored by authorities and even within parts of the church. This concerns the sanctity of life, the fact that God created humankind as male and female, that life has an eternal dimension, and so on. To dare to stand up for the truth when perhaps both one’s job and one’s honor are at stake requires a certain kind of courage. May God help us to have that courage.
