Total Joy
“Total joy,” reports SVT’s correspondent from a crowd gathered in a square in Mataró, Spain, following the victory in the World Cup final.
We’ve seen many scenes of joy during the World Cup. A decisive goal that triggers a surge of joy, a euphoric outburst of emotional exhilaration that wells up and overwhelms everything and everyone. I must admit: even I get swept up in it.
But the joy is fleeting. Even the total joy of a World Cup victory does not last forever.
Eternal joy—does it exist?
The prophet Isaiah speaks of a time when: “Everlasting joy will crown their heads. They will have joy and gladness; sorrow and sighing will flee away.” And in the Book of Revelation, we read that: “Now the dwelling place of God is among humanity. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them. And he will wipe away every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more, nor will there be any more mourning, crying, or pain, for the former things have passed away.”
This is central to the Christian faith—that there is a future, an eternal life in a restored creation.
Can this really be true—that death will be no more: no more sorrow, only eternal joy?
Yes, why not? I believe it is true, and I believe I have good reasons for doing so.
