I fotboll tilldelas inga stilpoäng.

The Ball Is Round

The 2026 World Cup, perhaps the world’s biggest sporting event, has kicked off. As of this writing, Sweden has done well, but how will things go from here?

“The ball is round; anything can happen,” Zlatan Ibrahimovic once said when asked to predict the outcome of an upcoming big match. These words of wisdom often prove true. The better team hits the crossbar, the post, goes wide, or is stopped by the goalkeeper. The weaker team manages to get the ball to roll over the goal line with a misdirected tap of the toe. The ball is round, and it’s the goals that count. In soccer, there are no style points.

Life, like soccer, is not entirely predictable. We have ideas, dreams, and projects that we’d love to see come to fruition. Sometimes we succeed, but sometimes things don’t go as planned. There are shots that hit the post, shots that go wide, and sometimes even own goals. I speak from experience.

With a Christian worldview, however, we have hope for a final victory. I’ll quote a few lines from Paul’s letter to the church in Rome:

…”But in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor rulers, neither things present nor things to come, neither powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
