22. Civilisation

English version: Civilisation

Civilisation

Civilization

It is said that, in addition to knowledge, four components are needed to build a modern civilization: steel, concrete, nitrogen (artificial fertilizer), and oil. But are these components available in inexhaustible supplies, or are we in the process of depleting our planet’s resources? Perhaps new innovations will emerge that can replace the resources that are running out. In any case, our world, as it is constructed today, is in great need of steel, concrete, nitrogen, and oil; and anything that hinders access to these creates major global difficulties and conflicts.

In this context, I would like to remind you of a completely different civilization that is worthy of the name. I am, of course, thinking of the Kingdom of God. Jesus taught his disciples to pray: “Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.” Jesus also taught that this kingdom is already among us and within us, but that one day it will become fully visible to the whole world.

The Bible speaks of the restoration of creation into a new heaven and a new earth where righteousness will reign. Some theologians argue that the original text here does not refer to something entirely new, but rather to a qualitative renewal or transformation—a creation that is fresh, cleansed of the consequences of sin, and different in nature from the present one. I think this new earth will not be dependent on steel, concrete, nitrogen, and oil. I may be wrong, but I believe God has much better solutions for this new earth in His toolbox. Furthermore, the new earth will be integrated with heaven. A new, fantastic scenario awaits us in the future.
