Mammon
De flesta av forntidens och antikens gudar tillbeds inte längre, åtminstone inte i någon större utsträckning. Men en avgud står fortfarande stadigt med bägge fötterna på jorden – Mammon. Ordet mammon kommer ursprungligen från arameiskan där det betyder ”rikedom”. Jesus varnar sina åhörare i sin bergspredikan ”Ni kan inte tjäna både Gud och Mammon”.
En slagdänga som plågade vårt land på 60-talet har i refrängen: ”Ja se pengar, är till bekymmer, för fattig och för rik”. Denna avskalade visdom tror jag stämmer ganska bra med verkligheten. Det är ett bekymmer att ha för lite pengar, att inte kunna betala sina räkningar med mera. Men att ha för mycket pengar kan också skapa bekymmer. Väldigt få tycks kunna hantera ett överskott av pengar på ett rättfärdigt sätt.
Utifrån ett kristet perspektiv gäller Jesu ord: ”Samla er inte skatter på jorden, där rost och mal förstör och tjuvar bryter sig in och stjäl. Samla er skatter i himlen, där varken rost eller mal förstör och där inga tjuvar bryter sig in och stjäl. För där din skatt är, där kommer också ditt hjärta att vara.”
Paulus skriver, i en viss situation, till församlingen i Korint: ”Just nu ska ert överflöd avhjälpa deras brist, så att deras överflöd en annan gång kan avhjälpa er brist. Så blir det lika för alla, som det står skrivet: Den som samlat mycket hade ingenting över, och den som samlat lite saknade ingenting.” Vad innebär detta? Är Paulus kommunist?

Det finns, såvitt jag vet, inget bestämt mått på hur mycket rikedom man får ha. Allt handlar om rättfärdighet och att dela med sig.

But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
Paul writes, in a specific situation, to the congregation in Corinth: ”At the present time your abundance should supply their lack, so that their abundance may also supply your lack. Then there will be equality, as it is written: ’The one who gathered much had nothing left over, and the one who gathered little had no lack. What does this mean? Is Paul a communist?
Among the ministries and gifts mentioned in 1 Corinthians chapter 12, there is a gift that is translated as “to help” (Greek: antilēpsis). It is said to mean just that: to help, to give support. In a Christian context, having a lot of money is a gift that enables one to remedy the lack of others. Those who are rich have a responsibility to manage their wealth and share it.
When the apostle Peter repeats Isaiah’s vision of a new heaven and a new earth, he adds “where righteousness shall dwell.” In other words, the new earth will be characterized by righteousness. The difference between the current world order and the one to come is about righteousness.
As far as I know, there is no specific measure of how much wealth one is allowed to have. It is all about righteousness and sharing.
